In Year 1 we start our learning with a focus on new beginnings. As we transition from Reception to Key Stage One we are thinking of the exciting new challenges that we will face and sharing our hopes and goals for the upcoming year.
In literacy we are continuing to increase our understanding of phonics and start to apply this in sentence writing using strategies such as ‘Think it, say it, Write it, Check it.’. We will explore a range of genres and write our own stories, poems and non- fiction pieces.
In Maths we continue to develop our understanding of numbers and begin to use a range of methods to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
Our topics for the year are transport, toys and books, carnival of the animals, our local area and ocean and seas. These will be taught across all areas including history, geography and science. Our learning will be supported through trips and workshops as well as practical activities.
Year 1 is a great year to watch the children develop into independent learners, children are encouraged to select their own challenges and resources within lessons and we use their likes and interests to guide the topic. We look forward to seeing children grow in confidence and enthusiasm.
