In Year 1 we make the transition from Reception to Key Stage One when we face exciting new challenges and share our hopes and goals for the whole year.
We deepen our understanding of the Catholic faith and other religions in Religious Education. We learn about different sacraments and develop a wider vocabulary when exploring major feasts through the Come & See scheme. In addition, we use our knowledge and understanding to make links to our everyday lives so that we can live in spiritual harmony in our school family.
In English we are continuing to increase our understanding of phonics and start to apply this in sentence writing, using strategies such as ‘Think it, Say it, Write it, Check it.’ We will explore a range of genres and write our own stories, poems and non-fiction pieces.
In Maths we continue to develop our understanding of numbers and begin to use a range of methods to add, subtract, multiply and divide. We learn to read, interpret and solve problems.
Our creative curriculum topics for the year include: Memory Box, Superheroes, Rio de Vida, Paws, Claws and Whiskers, Bright Lights, Big City and in the last term, The Enchanted Woodland. These will be taught across all areas including history, geography and science. Our learning will be supported through trips and workshops as well as practical activities.
Year 1 is a great year to watch the children develop into independent learners. Children are encouraged to select their own challenges and resources within lessons and we use their likes and interests to guide the topic. We look forward to seeing children grow in confidence and enthusiasm.
