About St Joseph's

At St Joseph’s Convent Preparatory School we aim to maintain a Christian environment where our children grow and develop into caring individuals, where they learn to discover their individual gifts and strengths secure in the knowledge that each has a role in the school and a valued contribution to make to their life.

School Organisation

The School accepts children into the Early Years Pre-Prep Class in the term in which they are three.

The School is made up of one class per year group from Early Years Pre-Prep to Year 6. There is a maximum of 24 children per class.

The academic year is divided into three terms with a mid-term holiday and the children's reports are given twice yearly, one half year report just before the Spring mid-term holiday and the second towards the end of the Summer term. Opportunities to discuss pupil progress are given at Parents Evenings held twice a year.

To encourage consideration, helpfulness, and maximum academic effort, the school is divided into four ‘Houses’ (St Andrew, St David, St George and St Patrick) who compete for the reward of house points.

Formal instruction is combined with modern teaching methods so that pupils are encouraged to listen, study and discover for themselves through formal and practical work in the classroom, outside in their local environment and on educational visits.

The religious ethos of the school permeates the curriculum and is not confined to the religious education timetable. All children follow the ‘Come and See’ scheme recommended by the Southwark Diocese. In Year 3 Catholic children can attend the school’s Sacramental Preparation Programme for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Both Sacraments are received in the Summer Term of Year 3.

The curriculum comprises the usual core subjects taught in primary schools, with a strong emphasis on the basic skills. Pupils are assessed in The Early Years Pre-Prep (Nursery) and in the Early Years Reception. The Early Years Transfer Form is then passed to Year 1.

* The Year 2 pupils take the Key Stage 1 Standard Assessment Tests (SATs).

* The Year 6 pupils take the Key Stage 2 Standard Assessment Tests (SATs).

French, Music, Physical Education and Speech & Drama are part of the school curriculum. There is a fully equipped gymnasium, a stage, large playing field, a well-equipped play area and an indoor heated swimming pool.

All children take part in the Christmas concerts and may be involved in competitions, concerts and performances at other times during the year. The school also offers extra specialist activities such as lessons in drums, guitar, violin, piano, ballet and jazz.

The school has its own kitchen and catering staff and all meals are prepared and cooked daily from local fresh ingredients on the premises.

Wraparound Care

The school provides wraparound care with our daily Breakfast Club starting at 7.30am, school lunch on site, lunchtime clubs and After-School Clubs from 3.30pm to 6pm (including supper).
