Cornerstones offers a broad and balanced curriculum which is knowledge and skills based with a creative edge. This gives our staff access to over 80 themed projects mapped to the national curriculum, which we then adapt to fit the needs of our children.
The Four Cornerstones of Learning provide the structure on which to build your curriculum. We call these Engage, Develop, Innovate, and Express.
We believe this pedagogy reflects the best way children learn and is rooted in a variety of different educational approaches and research. Put simply, the four stages are as follows:
- Engage – hook children in with a memorable experience
- Develop – allow children time to gather the skills and knowledge they need to develop a deep understanding
- Innovate – offer creative experiences that allow children to apply their skills, knowledge and understanding
- Express – provide the space and time for reflecting, evaluating, and celebrating learning
Cornerstones is a fully immersive experience, which teaches the foundation subjects within one curriculum. It is topic based learning, therefore a child learns in a fluid rather than fragmented way. It builds year on year on their artistic abilities with skills developing in sketching as well as other mediums, such as clay.
The opportunity to complete design projects add a problem solving element to their artistic talents. ICT skills allow children to research their topic and delve into a world of adventure to find out more. This may be the romans, space or even their own gardens!
They use these developing skills to complete reports and presentations to showcase their understanding and share their new knowledge. Children can also use mapping skills and local experiences to enhance their understanding of the world around them.
Throughout the topics they develop a timeline throughout history as such a wide range of topics are covered throughout the school; children leap into the past, eager to learn about times gone by. It is an exciting experience and children cannot wait to hear and learn about new topics.
Throughout the year parents are given the opportunity to attend an Express Exhibition for their child's year group.
