At St Joseph’s, we offer a welcoming, engaging and inspiring environment to help young, inquisitive minds build the foundation they need to start their learning journey.
Children benefit from spacious, well-resourced classrooms with direct access to a vast, self-contained outdoor space. Small class sizes allow staff to plan exciting activities tailored to the individual learning needs of each child. We also organise termly trips for both classes to enhance the learning of current topics.
We pride ourselves on our positive relationships with parents. Each child has a Home and School Sharing Book which can be used as a diary to document the exciting learning that happens at home. Parents are invited into class on a regular basis for workshops and theme days. Children in both Pre-Prep and Reception receive weekly Language, Music, PE (including swimming) and Speech and Drama sessions taught by specialist teachers.
Early Years at St Joseph’s is divided into Pre-Prep (nursery) for 3 and 4 year olds and Reception for 4 and 5 year olds. Children can join our pre-prep class from the term of their third birthday.
Children in Pre-Prep (nursery) benefit from a well-planned, engaging and creative day tailored to the individual learning needs of children in the class.
A day in Pre-Prep includes a good mixture of structured literacy and maths circle times and high quality self-initiated learning, where the children get the chance to practise the skills taught. The aim is to help children get used to structured classes and a school environment, to ease the transition into Reception class.
Throughout the course of a normal day, all Pre-Prep children receive high quality teaching delivered in a mix of whole class, small group and one to one sessions. Our Pre-Prep classes start at 8.30am and finish at 3.30pm. You can choose to do a mixture of sessions that best suit you, including full days, mornings (8:30am to 12noon) and afternoons (12.30pm to 3.30pm). All children attending full days and mornings receive a cooked school lunch.
If you require an earlier start or later finish, we offer a Breakfast Club from 7.30am to 8.30am and After School Club until 6pm. For more information, visit our wraparound care web page
Reception is a natural progression from Pre-Prep and is where the more formal learning increases. Daily phonics, literacy and maths sessions ensure the children make good progress and achieve a good level of development, when assessed against the Early Learning Goals, at the end of the year.
A good balance of formal and self-initiated high quality teaching ensures that our Reception children are well prepared for the expectations of the National Curriculum when entering Year 1.
